Gösta Ekman (senior)

Gösta Ekman ( pronunciation: [ ˌ ʝœs ː ta ː e kman ], born December 28, 1890 in Stockholm, † January 12, 1938 ) was a Swedish theater and film actor.

Theater

He had his stage debut in 1908. From 1913 to 1925 he was part of the ensemble of the Swedish Theatre in Stockholm, from 1926 to 1930, he served as director of the Oscar Theatre and from 1931 to 1935 he had his own theater, the Vasa Theatre. Ekman was known for his expressive interpretations of Shakespeare. In addition, he is considered the first stage partner of Zarah Leander.

Film

Since 1911, Gösta Ekman has also worked for the film. In 1912 he joined Victor Sjöström's directing debut on The Gardener ( Trädgårdsmästaren ) and played in the following year under the direction of Mauritz Stiller in The strange girl (The okända ). He developed in his home to a popular actor and moved to lover roles. In 1922, he starred alongside Jenny Hasselqvist in Sjöström's Who for? ( Vem Dömer ). A highlight of his career is the embodiment of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Faust in Faust - a German folk tale ( 1926). In the 1930s Ekman worked several times with Gustaf Molander. Among his most important roles under this director include the quixotic, idealistic professor Rolf Swedenhielm in Swedenhielms (1935 ) and the violinist Holger Brandt on the side of Ingrid Bergman in Intermezzo ( 1936).

Gösta Ekman is the father of actor, director and screenwriter Hasse Ekman (1915-2004) and the grandfather of actor Gösta Ekman junior ( born 1939 ) and Stefan Ekman (1944 ) and the director Mikael Ekman ( born 1943 ).
