Goulet de Brest

The Strait of Brest ( also goulet de Brest) connects the bay of Brest (French rade de Brest ) with the Atlantic Ocean.

It is 3000 m long and 1500 m wide. In the middle of the strait, there is a reef that passing vessels is forced to pass through the strait either the northern or the southern shore. The tidal current reaches here a speed of four to five knots. Sailboats often wait in the bay of Camaret -sur -Mer on the best for the passage time.

Since there is in Brest since the mid 17th century one of the most important military harbor in France, is the Strait of Brest of great strategic importance. In their defense, military buildings, such as the fortress of Bertheaume were built on both banks.
