Gourgeon

Gourgeon is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Gourgeon situated at an altitude of 250 m above sea level, 4 km west of Combeaufontaine and about 26 km west-northwest of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the west of the département, in the gently undulating landscape on the plateau north of the Saône, in a valley at the source of Gourgeonne.

The area of ​​13.69 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the region of the plateau north of the Saônetals. The central part of the area occupied by the basin of Gourgeon, in which rises the Gourgeonne. It provides for the drainage south to the Saône. The basin of Gourgeon is on average 240 m and has a diameter of approximately one kilometer. Flanked the trough of plateau-like hills that reach an average height of 280 m. These heights consist of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly sediments of the upper Jurassic period (in the south ) and the Middle Jurassic time (in the north of the municipal territory ). In the Talniederung and on the plateau dominates agricultural use, but there are larger areas of forest. To the west the municipality area extends into the Bois Brûlé (298 m ) and up to the stream of Sorlière, a right tributary of the Gourgeonne. Southeast of the well of Gourgeon is the vast forest area of the Bois du Champ- Ramey, in the 318 meters, the highest elevation of Gourgeon is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Gourgeon are Melin and Semmadon in the north, Combeaufontaine in the east, the south and Cornot Lavigney in the West.

History

Remains from the prehistoric period indicate an early presence of man. From the Merovingian period are sarcophagi that were found here. In the Middle Ages Gourgeon belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government had initially served as masters of Traves that the place in 1225 the monastery Cherlieu leaving. Together with the Franche -Comté Gourgeon came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Gourgeon is a member of the 10 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Belles Fontaines.

Attractions

The church of Notre -Dame de la Nativity was built in 1751. It houses a rich interior, including a richly carved and gilded high altar ( 18th century ), statues from the 15th and 16th century paintings from the 18th century and several grave slabs. Outside the church is a forged iron cross in the 18th century. At the cemetery, the chapel Sainte -Anne is located ( 19th century). The village is characterized by numerous houses from the 15th to the 18th century, showing the traditional style of the Haute -Saône.

Population

With 242 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Gourgeon is one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 476 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Gourgeon was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses, especially in the sectors of wood processing and precision engineering. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road N19, which runs from Vesoul to Langres. Further road links exist with Cornot, Lavigney, Melin and Semmadon.
