Mississippi

The Government Bridge is a swing bridge over the Mississippi River and joins Rock Iceland in Illinois with Davenport, Iowa. The bridge overlooks a dam and a lock, Lock and Dam No.. 15 mentioned. The building carries two lanes for car traffic as well as a double-track railway line. Depending on their position will either allow the ship traffic through the lock or vehicle traffic on the bridge. The current structure is the fourth at this point.

History

The first bridge at this location was, however, 450 meters upstream of the current structure built in 1850. It was the first building on the Mississippi and thus played an important role in the American Civil War as well as in the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The bridge was part of the Chicago Rock Iceland and Pacific Railroad. The Fährbesitzer on the Mississippi rejected the bridge, more out of concern for the loss of their Fährmonopols than limited ways of navigating through the river. On April 22, 1856, the building was opened.

In the following years, the first design was first replaced in a short time by a wooden, and later by a steel bridge. The steel bridge was built but elsewhere and had, in contrast to the previous bridges two driving levels. Rail transport used the upper, the vehicular traffic the lower level. The old bridge and the tailed railway were abandoned. The current building, constructed in 1896, nearly equal to the previous bridge, it was only the previous single-track line expanded to two tracks.
