Government House (Melbourne)

The Government House ( literally translated as government buildings ) in Melbourne is the official residence and the official residence of the Governor of Victoria. In addition, it was from 1901 to 1930 the office of the Governor-General of Australia. It is located adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Charles La Trobe, Governor of Victoria, acquired in 1841 the foundation for the later Government House, while Ferdinand von Mueller, the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in 1857 built the entire site, including the investment of the future Government House as a huge park. The Regierunggsitz itself was built from 1871 to 1876. Previously lived in the governors ' Toorak House, "as La Trobe in " La Trobe 's Cottage ". The architect was William Wardell.

After the creation of the Australian Government in 1901 to the relocation of Parliament to Canberra in 1927, the Australian Governor-General of the Government House used as an official residence. Even after relocation of the Federal Parliament to Canberra the Governor-General remained another three years living at Government House. Since 1934, the Government House is continuously used by the governors of Victoria as a seat of government.
