Grafstein ( Slow: Grabštanj ) is a market town with 2838 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia.

Geographical location

Grafstein is located in Klagenfurt Basin, about 12 km east of the provincial capital of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.

Neighboring communities

History

Grafstein was first documented in 890: Arnulf of Carinthia confirmed the Archbishop Frederick of Salzburg possession of " Grauindorf ". Built in the Romanesque parish church was consecrated in 1116. On the occasion of the investiture of the estate and the court " Gravindorf " the viscount stone was first mentioned in 1158. After the castle, the noble family of the Earl Steiner, whose seal was used as a template for today's coat of arms, which became extinct but again in the 14th century named. Castle and lordship subsequently changed hands many times. The castle was heavily damaged during the landslide of the Dobratsch in 1348 and gradually fell into disrepair. When Johann Andreas von Rosenberg in 1629 Grafstein acquired, he left the dilapidated ruins already not recover, but west of the village build a new castle.

The local church Grafstein was formed in 1850 and has been extended to the municipal structural reform in 1973 to parts of the territory of the dissolved municipality Mieger. 1990 Grafstein has the right to use the designation " market town " award.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the municipality has Grafstein 2,602 inhabitants, of which 97.1 % have Austrian citizenship. For the Roman Catholic Church to 90.1 % of the community population profess the Protestant Church 2.8%, no religious persuasion are 5.5%.

The Slovenian dialect

The community Grafstein / Grabštanj counts historically the Slovenian dialect area ( dialect ) of the Klagenfurt field ( Polyansky govor oz. Poljanščina Celovškega Polya ), which is a transitional dialect between the Slovenian dialects of Jauntals ( podjunščina ) and the Rose Valley ( rožanščina ). As a special variant of the Slovenian dialect Rosental already has him Johann Scheinigg 1882 identified, which could be confirmed in the study of dialectological Dr.Katja Storm Schnabl due to field research. Scheinigg divided in his work " The assimilation ... " the Slovenian dialect Rosental in three geographical areas: The Lower Rosental Rosental the Upper and Klagenfurt level. On this latter area, he said: " ... The third sub - dialect prevails in the plane to Klagenfurt (small ), it has in common with the first pronunciation of e and o, but differs from the previous two by the frequent withdrawal the Accentes where those have him on the final syllables, and this is particularly true of the neuter nouns and Adjktive, eg [ ... ] ".

  • St. Stephen: The predecessor of the present parish church was consecrated in 1116 and was a private church of the nobles of Lungau. It was rebuilt in 1158 due to disrepair and went to the Gurk cathedral chapter. The church is a single, Romanesque building with choir tower, polygonal choir and baroque chapel extensions to the north and south sides. The tower has pointed arch windows and a sound onion dome

Crafts

In Grafstein is Austria's last hand brickworks, in the floor tiles - are manually " beaten " in operation - the Grafensteiner plate. Alois Falkinger has taken over the old brick factory of the family Orsini -Rosenberg in the 90s, so to save an ancient craft. Listed building in the Alps as the Heihsgut have traditionally been equipped with this particular soil.

Traffic

The Grafensteiner country road ( L107 ) branches off from the B 70 ( connection Klagenfurt to international market ) east of the Gurkerbrücke near Castle Rain by the packer road and leads directly to Grafstein. At the roundabout in front of the Marktgemeindeamt the route leads on to the south to Anna Bridge, Galicia and iron Kappel. From the ER - Valentin- German man - L116 Place the leads in an easterly direction Tainach and St. Kanzian Klopeinersee. In addition, the Marktgemeindeamt leads the L102 to the west and connects the village Truttendorf with the L100, the Miegerer street in Ebenthal.

Drastic measures necessitated the construction of Koralmbahn, the two main cities of Klagenfurt and Graz will connect again: The Lowering of the route required the dismantling of industrial buildings; the old railroad crossings was replaced by a flyover.

Coat of arms

As a template for the coat of arms of the municipality was the seal of Henry of Grafstein, which is available at documents from the years 1239 and 1240. There the municipality on 1 September 1954, it was awarded and has the following blazon: " A red shield, in which a silver goldbezungter wolf grows out of a golden, ornamented with five visible beads prong crown. " The flag is red and yellow with integrated crest.

Personalities

  • Oswald Gutsmann / Ožbalt Gutsman (1727-1790), an important Slovenian lexicographer and linguist, author of important works.
  • Franz Xaver Luzhin (1781-1854), 1824-1834 Prince Bishop of Trento and from 1835 to 1854, Prince Archbishop of Gorizia, was born on Sonnenhof vulgo Luzhin in Hum 18.
  • Valentin German man (1928-2010) was from 1958 to 2008 mayor of Grafstein.
  • The sculptor and painter Giselbert Hoke has built a home and studio in Saager castle.
