The glacier extends from the southwestern slopes of Mount Hay in the Elias chain initially eastward parallel to the US-Canadian border, bends about halfway to the south and flows in Glacier Bay National Park in the head region of Tarr Inlets, approximately one kilometer northeast of Margerie glacier.

Originally named the glacier in 1879 by John Muir. In 1892 the glacier had retreated so far that HF Reid from the United States Geological Survey, the distribution of ice in three separate glaciers decided maintained for the northernmost and largest named the Grand Pacific and the Middle Johns Hopkins Glacier called. The southernmost and smallest of the three was in 1899 by the Harrington expedition the name Reid Glacier.
