Grängesberg

Grängesberg is a locality ( Tätort ) in the town of Ludvika in southern Dalarna in Sweden.

History of iron ore mine

Grängesberg centuries was characterized by its Eisenerzgube, which until 1989 had been in operation since the 16th century. 1990 drove the last Erzbahn after Oxelösund on the Baltic Sea for export and the local ironworks.

Grängesbergsbolaget ( founded in 1896 as Trafik AB Grängesberg - Oxelösund ) was Sweden's largest mine operation and owned for many years one of the largest iron ore fleets in the world. The iron ore mines of course mountain had central Sweden richest ore deposits. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the iron ore was extracted in open later in the shaft mining. History of AC transfer

The place was Grängesberg end of the 19th century, internationally known for the world's first commercial transfer of three-phase alternating current. The transfer line was between the hydroelectric power station at the village Hällsjön and Grängesberg. It was in this case a distance of 12 km with a voltage of 9500 volts. The system should provide the mining area with electrical power for lighting and motors. This was a hitherto untried method, because before you had mechanical power transfer systems such as art linkage used.

Grängesberg today

The largest employer is the private brewery Spendrups. With the Grängesberg station of the town has a railway connection. Attractions include the Railway Museum Grängesberg and Cassels Donation, a concert hall, whose construction was made possible in 1898 through a donation of 250,000 crowns of the German - English financier Sir Ernest Cassel.
