Grapefruit (Band)

Grapefruit was a short-lived British rock - pop band in the late 1960s.

History

The band consisted of George Alexander ( bass player and singer, real name Alexander Young ), John Perry ( lead guitar, vocals), Pete Swettenham (rhythm guitar, vocals) and Geoff Swettenham (drums). The band's formation took place in 1967 in the context of the Beatles' own music publishing Apple Music Publishing, after Terry Doran, who in turn was friends with Brian Epstein and the Beatles, Perry had announced with Alexander and henceforth their band manager was. The idea for the band name grapefruit came from John Lennon.

George Alexander had as a songwriter since the summer of 1967 a contract with Apple, which is why band's own compositions have been published by Apple in future publishing. Apple at the time was only a music publisher (Apple Records was not until the spring of 1968 ), and so the band signed a recording contract with the small U.S. label their producer Terry Melcher Equinox. Outside the U.S., the productions of the label on RCA Victor (distributed by Decca Records ) published.

Their first single, Dear Delilah appeared in early 1968 and was ranked number 21 with both Grapefruits biggest hit in the UK charts. In Germany, the single reached number 24 and on the Billboard Hot 100, she came up to # 98 in the fall of 1968 also managed C'mon Marianne, a cover version in the original 1967 by The Four Seasons, a place in the top 40 in the UK.

The typical late - '60s rock-pop sound of the band is provided with psychedelic effects such as phasing. The mostly written by Alexander, melodic songs were accompanied with string arrangements and Mellotron. Sometimes they also built classical arrangements such as baroque flute sounds into their recordings.

In addition to other singles, the band released two studio albums, Around Grapefruit 1968 Deepwater 1969. On the latter rhythm guitarist Pete Swettenham was not involved. The band has been extended for at Bobby Goods ( vocals, guitar, harmonica ) and Mike Fowler (piano, keyboards, guitar ). The decoupled from the last album Single Deepwater reached the end of 1969 number 19 in the German singles chart. End of 1969, the band broke up.

George Alexander was in 1971 again entered the studio to with the help of his younger brother George Young and Harry Vanda - take the pop single Sha - Sha b / w Universal Party, which was published under the name of grapefruit on the record label Deram - both ex- Easybeats.
