Graves de Vayres

The vineyards of Graves de Vayres located in the north of the large appellation Entre -Deux- Mers, a part of the Bordeaux wine region. Despite the similarity of the name, the area has nothing to do with the famous area of Graves. Rather, the name Graves suggests a very gravelly bottom. The name Graves de Vayres was used in the 19th century and since 31 July 1937, the area has the status of an Appellation d' Origine ( AOC short ). Open to vineyards within the communities Arveyres and the eponymous Vayres.

The appellation encompasses 600 acres of vineyards on the left bank of the Dordogne and lies almost opposite the town of Libourne. Of the 600 hectares account for only 110 ha of white grape. Even in 1982, the proportion of white varieties was higher than that of the red varieties. Due to increasing difficulties to market white wines of Entre -Deux- Mers region, they turned increasingly to the red varieties.

Although in the region also white sweet wines were pressed, almost only dry white wines from the grape varieties Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle and a small proportion of Merlot Blanc are currently produced. The juice must have at least 178 g / l sugar have (→ Most weight) and after fermentation, the minimum alcohol content must be 10.5 percent by volume. The harvest limit for white varieties is 43 hectoliters / hectare.

For the dry red wines Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot are allowed. The juice must have at least 178 g / l sugar and after fermentation, the minimum alcohol content must be 10.5 vol percent. The harvest limit for red varieties is 40 hectoliters / hectare.
