Great Britain women's national handball team

The British women's national handball team is the national team of the British Handball Association ( BHA) and the United Kingdom expresses future at international tournaments in women's handball.

Background

Handball is the motherland of football largely unknown. As on 6 July 2005 London won the bid for the 2012 Olympics and the UK qualify automatically as aligning country to participate in the tournament, began intensive activities to establish a British women's national handball team.

Structure of the national

For the period from 2006 to 2009, the BHA has a budget of £ 3 million, which corresponds to the equivalent of 4.3 million euros, equipped to build a national team. A three-stage plan was thereby established.

The first selection in June 2007, a total of 4,800 British were in the " Sporting Giants " - excretions. The only criteria for participation was the body size that had to be at least 1.80 meters in women 's interest in sports and the common dream of the five rings.

In Glasgow was a trial with 70 test candidates who were recruited partly from other, non-Olympic sports, such as rugby and netball, held. It was followed by further training camp and ended up staying 30 candidates, 15 women and 15 men each, left that are now partially funded further in Denmark. In the spring of 2011 was finally decided that the team will participate in the Olympic Games in London 2012.

Head coach of the British women's national handball team is the Dane Morten Arvidsson.

Comments

Under handball in English usually games like Irish handball and American Handball understood. Here, however, is non-return games that are rather similar to squash where the ball is, however, played with the hands against the walls, hence the name. That's why is called handball in the UK, similar to the U.S. team handball or Olympic handball.
