Great Palm Island

Great Palm Iceland (also Palm Iceland, in use in Aboriginal name: Bwgcolman ) is the main island of the archipelago called the Palm Islands off the coast of Queensland in Australia. 2006 there were 1,984 inhabitants on the island.

Geography

The island is located about 65 kilometers northwest of Townsville and has an area of 55 km ². The official indicating the area of 70.9 km ² includes nine smaller islands of the group with a (basically the whole island group, with the exception of Iceland Pelorus, Orpheus Iceland and albino rock ) that belong to Aboriginal Shire of Palm Iceland. It is 15.9 km long and up to 10 km wide. The highest point is Mount Bentley with 554 meters.

The eponymous capital Palm Iceland lies on the west coast.

Fauna

In Great Palm Iceland kangaroo type Petrogale assimilis occurs.

History

The name of the island dates back to James Cook, who in 1770 traveled to the island.

An airport is located in the south of the island.
