Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island

- 18.733333333333146.56666666667Koordinaten: 18 ° 44 ' S, 146 ° 34' O The Aboriginal Shire of Palm Iceland is a Local Government Area ( LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland. The area is 69 km ² and has about 2,400 residents.

Geography

The Shire is located off the east coast of the state of the Coral Sea about 220 km south of Cairns and 1170 km north of the capital, Brisbane. It consists of the main island of the Great Palm Iceland, and several smaller islands.

In addition to the main settlement Palm Iceland on the western side of the main island there are three other small settlements in the Shire.

History

The archipelago was named by James Cook in 1770 on his voyage of discovery. 1918 Palm Iceland was chosen as a relocation site for a destroyed by a cyclone settlement on the River Hull and later came Aborigines from many other areas also. On the island, which stood until 1986, under their management, there have been riots and uprisings. 2005 Palm Iceland was found to be Aboriginal Shire Local Government.

Management

The Palm Iceland Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
