Great Scotland Yard

Great Scotland Yard is a street in the London borough of City of Westminster.

Location

Great Scotland Yard joins the streets Whitehall and Northumberland Avenue. The approximately 170 m long street located in the District of St. James in the City of Westminster.

History

The origin of the name is not exactly comprehensible. However, the kingdoms of England and Scotland was here until the unification in 1707, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Scotland. The Scottish kings used to reside here occasionally to visit with the English kings. In the 17th century Great Scotland Yard has been a venue for government buildings and residences for public servants. The major London architects Inigo Jones and Christopher Wren had their residence here. The great English poet John Milton lived during Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth of England a few years here.

The original headquarters of the London Metropolitan Police Service was on the corner of Whitehall / Great Scotland Yard. The main entrance was located on Great Scotland Yard. Over time, this circumstance led to the name Scotland Yard to metonym for the police headquarters was.

A plan of 1799 shows two more streets named Scotland Yard, which no longer exist, however, with this name today. Middle Scotland Yard was located in the south, parallel to Whitehall. Lower Scotland Yard was the next street to the south.

The Clarence pub dates from 1896 and was named after the Duke of Clarence. The opposite side was connected to the Clarence Pub through an archway, but this was removed in 1908 again. The building was then veneered with different colored bricks.

1953 referred to the Civil Service Club located in the old fire station. It is a club for more current and former state officials.

  • Great Scotland Yard was for the film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The visitor entrance was on the corner of Great Scotland Yard / Scotland Place the Ministry of Magic.
