The Green Liberals were initially represented by Martin Bäumle in the National Council and until May 2007 with Verena Diener in Zurich Cantonal Government. Two were not originally selected as members of the Green Liberal Party, but are converted by the Greens.

Beginning of 2006, the Green Liberals first emerged in some communities with their own lists for the elections. In the cities of Winterthur, Uster and Opfikon the Green Liberals were able to move with two seats in the municipal council, in the city of Zurich, they failed, however, at the 5- percent threshold ( the rule that a party in at least one constituency at least 5 % of the votes must be given ).

At the cantonal elections on 15 April 2007, the glp was able to achieve an electoral success and brought straight away ten seats (out of 180). As a result, the creation of a green liberal party has been emulated in other cantons.

Even after the establishment of the National Party, the Green Liberals in the canton of Zurich were able to record election victories. In the local elections on March 7, 2010, they were able to move into the Zurich City Council and were considerably strengthened in the other municipality parliaments.
