Gregorio Allegri

Gregorio Allegri (* 1582 in Rome, † February 17, 1652 ) was an Italian priest, composer and tenor singer.

Life

Since 1591 was Gregorio Allegri chorister at San Louis of the French, and how his brother Domenico Allegri ( 1585-1629 ), a pupil of Giovanni Maria Nanino. After his ordination, he was from 1607 to 1621 Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Fermo. From 1629 until his death he was a singer in the Papal Chapel in the service of Pope Urban VIII

His most famous composition is the nine -part Miserere, which underwent many extra effects and changes over the years. The piece was performed during Holy Week until 1870 every year in the Sistine Chapel and was not allowed to be copied. On a visit there in 1770 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart heard the song and wrote it down later from memory. A first publication of the work from 1771 is from Charles Burney. Him and Mozart it is thanks to well that the piece was not lost forever. The Miserere also impressed Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn.
