Gregorio della Suburra

Gregorio della Suburra (* in Rome; † around 1162 ) was an Italian cardinal.

Life

Gregorio, surnamed Centu, came from Rome, from the city Suburra and was related to the aristocratic family Capocci. It is often claimed that he was a nephew of Anastasius IV, but this is not documented.

Not later than March 1, 1140, Pope Innocent II appointed him Cardinal Priest of S. Maria in Trastevere ( S. Callisto ); as such he signed papal documents dated April 29, 1140 to June 25, 1154. 1153 he participated in the negotiations on the Treaty of Constance between Pope Eugene III. and King Frederick I in part.

Between June 25 and September 15, 1154, he was charged by Anastasius IV to the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina. He took part in the conflicting papal election in September 1159 and stood on the side of Alexander III. Under this pope, he appears as Cardinal Dean ( the first among cardinal bishops ) and papal vicar of Rome. On September 20, 1162 it is occupied for the last time and probably died in the same year.
