Puerto Plata Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional Gregorio Luperon ) is the international airport of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. He is about one million passengers annually the third largest airport in the country and has great importance for tourism.

Location and Transport

The airport is located 18 km east of Puerto Plata in the north of the country and only has road access.

Airlines and destinations

The airport is used alongside regional connections within the Caribbean and North and South America mainly by charter airlines. Air Berlin, Condor and Edelweiss Air Puerto Plata connect regularly with Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich. The flight time from Germany is about 10 hours.

Incidents

  • On February 6, 1996 alone, 189 passengers died, including 164 German in the crash of flight 301 - Birgenair due to technical failure, followed by human error, shortly after takeoff from Puerto Plata.
