Gregory Meeks

Gregory Weldon Meeks ( born September 25, 1953 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party, and since 1998 a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the state of New York.

Biography

Gregory Weldon Meeks was born in New York City. He attended Adelphi University. At Howard University, he graduated in law. Meeks was an assistant district attorney and prosecutor in drug offenses for the city of New York. In addition, he was a member of a commission of inquiry, which dealt with malfeasance and organized crime. He has also served as an overseer for Judge for the New York workers' compensation system. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1992. He belonged to the State Assembly until his election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ins U.S. House of Representatives, he was elected in 1998 as the successor to Floyd H. Flake for the sixth New York congressional district. The district covers a large part of Queens. The John F. Kennedy International Airport is also located in this district. Meeks defended his seat in all subsequent elections. In the House, he is a member of the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Meeks is married to Simone Marie Meeks. He lives in Queens and is a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
