Grevillea

Grevillea juniperina

The Grevilleen or silver oak ( Grevillea ) is a genus within the family of the silver tree family ( Proteaceae ).

Description

Grevillea species grow as an evergreen, mostly erect or creeping shrubs, some species than trees, with plant height depending on the type 0.5 to 35 meters. The leaves are sessile or pedunculated depending on the type. The leaf blades are simple, while smooth or serrated, or shared with up to three division levels. The leaf margin is bent back to flat. There is pinnate and network or Parallelnervatur.

The hermaphrodite flowers are also stalked or sessile depending on the type. They are usually paired with a common carrier sheet, arranged in plural inflorescences. The perianth is usually zygomorphic with recurved ends, sometimes regularly with raised ends. There are usually four, rarely three bracts present, the separate on flowering, so as to release the stylus end. The bloom are smooth or hairy on both sides. The anthers sit bloom cladding directly. The nectar glands are completely or ring-shaped, rarely missing or cruciform. The ovary is glabrous or hairy. The sessile or pedunculated Upper constant ovary contains two ovules. The disc-or cone- shaped scar is upright or tilted constantly to the side of the pen.

The bald or hairy fruits are usually follicles or rarely ( in about Grevillea candicans ) a achenes and contain only one or two seeds. Depending on the type, they remain long on the plant or drop out early. The pericarp is often hard shells. The mostly flat ellipsoid, rarely hemispherical seeds are winged or wingless.

Dissemination

The Grevillea species are native to Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Almost all species are native to Australia. Only five species occur in areas outside Australia: Grevillea exul, Greviileea gillvayi and Grevillea meisneri are native to New Caledonia. Grevillea Grevillea papuana elbertii and are native to Sulawesi and New Guinea. Two other species, Grevillea Grevillea glauca and baileyana, occur in New Guinea and in Queensland, Australia.

System

The first description of 1809 in Joseph Knight: On the cultivation of the plants BELONGING to the natural order of Proteeae, p 120 uses the spelling " Grevillia ". Type species is Grevillea R.Br. aspleniifolia ex Knight. The homonym Grevillea LCBeck & Emmons was published in 1826 in the American Journal of Science, and Arts, Volume 11, panel 1. The genus name honors Charles Francis Greville Grevillea (1749-1809), a member of the Royal Society and the Linnean Society of London.

Use

The flowers of Grevilleen were with the Aborigines popular because of their sweet nectar. He was shaken for immediate consumption on the hand or placed in a vessel called Coolamon with a little water to get a sweet drink.

Many species are grown as ornamental plants of Grevilleen for their showy foliage and flowers; it arose in culture many hybrids.
