Grey Abbey ( Iugum Dei; Irish: Mainistir Liath ) is a former Cistercian abbey in Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom. She lay in County Down north of the village Greyabbey in the area of ​​Ards Borough Council.

History

The monastery was founded in 1193 by Affreca, the daughter of the King of Man and wife of John de Courcy, a daughter house of Holme Cultram Abbey in Cumbria, England, a daughter house of the monastery of Melrose in Scotland. It was thus one of the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. During the invasion of Edward Bruce ( 1315-1318 ), the monastery was destroyed. It was dissolved in 1541 and destroyed in the subsequent period. However, the church was in the 17th century, a new roof and served until 1778 as a parish church. Improper restoration of the 19th century led to further decay.

Buildings and plant
