Grigory Soroka

Grigori Vasilievich Soroka, actually GW Vassiliev ( Васильев ), (. Russo Григорий Васильевич Сорока, born 15 Novemberjul / November 27 1823greg in Pokrovskoe ( Tver ). .. † 10 Apriljul / April 22 1864greg ) was a Russian painter, a bondsman, the most famous student Alexei Wenezianows.

Soroka was born into the family of the landowner Milyukovs. 1842-47 he studied art at A. Wenezianow who strove for his release. Then his owner forbade him further trips to St. Petersburg and employed him as a gardener. Far from the art scene and spiritually alone after the death of the teacher began his artistic talent soon to fade. 1850-60 he lived in his home community and focused on village churches for whom he painted several icons.

Since he could not meet the conditions for the release of its owner ( serfdom reform of Alexander II's March 3, 1861), Soroka was not released. He lodged a complaint, but was rejected, imprisoned for sedition and possibly whipped. He was released for health reasons. He hanged himself in the back house of the estate.

From Soroka today only about 20 undated paintings are preserved.
