The Grill castle in the Harz is a castle on the grill mountain in the district of Mansfeld - South Harz in Saxony- Anhalt. It is the ruin of a small Ministerialenburg.

Geographical location

The Grill castle is located in the Lower Harz Harz nature park / Saxony- Anhalt above Grillenberg, one situated on the national road 230 and gonna district of Sangerhausen. It is located about 350 m northeast of the village church on a 312.5 m above sea level. NN high mountain, which is Suedharz within the Biosphere Reserve karst part of the nature reserve gypsum karst landscape Pölsfeld.

History

The place Grillenberg has already called 880/890 in Hersfeld tithe directory. A castle it will have but at that time not yet exist. The first is to assume, as in 1217 a Tidericus de Grellenberch is mentioned as a vassal of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg; possibly the castle was built around 1200. That resulted from large-sized rough stone lower parts of the walls of the castle ruins are certainly attributable to the original Romanesque fortification. 1286 are shown Burgmannen from the families Muser and Morungen. A record dates from 1311.

1347 bought back the Margrave of Meissen, Frederick the Serious, the reign of the Duke of Brunswick, in whose hands it had reached with the Margraviate of Landsberg. During the Halberstadt bishop feud that Bishop Albrecht II of Brunswick (1325-1358) against the rulers in the Harz area, mainly against the Counts of Regenstein, led, the castle was fought over. It was conquered by the Counts of Mansfeld 1362. On this occasion was possibly an approximately 100 m east of the castle located entrenchment as a counter mounting.

The buildings in the visible, shaped by brickwork second stage is classified in the literature in the 14th century.

1366 was Duke of Brunswick Magnus owner of the castle. He practiced from here patronage rights over the monastery Sittichenbach from. 1485 the castle belonged in turn to the Elector of Saxony, Ernst of Saxony. From which it came into the hands of the Counts of Mansfeld.

At least since 1486 were the lords of Morungen as vassals in the castle. 1547 coincided with the death of George's reign as the Morungen ceased fief to the Saxon Office Sangerhausen and the castle was destroyed. The time of the final task is unknown. Since the beginning of the 17th century, it is considered expired.

Plant

From the Grill castle once with 200 m total length and 70 m width ewa are still ruins of the main castle, shield wall and kennel and ramparts of the neck trench available.

Viewing and hiking

From the Grillenburg the gaze falls down on the village Grillenberg. The ruin is included as No. 208 in the system of stamp locations of the Harz hiking pin.
