Grinderman

Grinderman was an Australian garage rock band consisting of Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martin Casey and Jim Sclavunos. All band members also play with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Named after the band's debut album was released in the UK on 5 March 2007 and in the U.S. on 10 April 2007. Unlike the Bad Seeds Nick Cave in Grinderman also plays guitar (with the Bad Seeds, he did so only in one piece, " Rye whiskey" ). Grinderman 2 was released in 2010, followed by the remix album Grinderman 2 RMX (2012 ). On December 10, 2011 Nick Cave gave an appearance of Grinderman at the Australian Meredith Music Festival, the breakup of the band known closed at the same time but a reunion in a few years is not enough.

Band History

Following the recording of the double album " Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus " wanted Nick Cave to play with three of his Bad Seeds colleagues even quicker and dirtier music. Originally the band was to be called Vortex, but there were already 18 other groups with the same name, which is why the choice fell on Grinderman. Nick Cave explained in an interview: "The name just fit the band. It summarizes what we do. We flay ( engl. to grind). "In February 2006, the four musicians moved for first demos in the Metropolis Studios in. In March, the album was recorded in six days in the RAK Studios, but the overdubs and mixing were carried out again in the Metropolis Studios.

At the same time launched the Grinderman website where the band among other things, produced a podcast in which through a series of recording fragments of an insight into the studio work of the band is given.

The songs of the band were not vorkomponiert, but were largely due to Nick Cave's guitar playing, to which took in the rest of the band. Cave, the more rustic goes to the guitar works, reaching a rougher and harder sound of music.

Of the critics, the album was praised especially for the aforementioned roughness and rudeness and often compared with former Nick Cave's band The Birthday Party.

On 11 May 2007 the band played in the BBC show "Later ... with Jools Holland" songs " Honey Bee ( Let's Fly to Mars )" and " No Pussy Blues". In addition, Grinderman played in May on the All Tomorrow 's Parties Festival in Somerset. The band was also be seen on the June 20 London Forum. On 23 July 2007 the band first appeared on American television in the Late Show with David Letterman, where she played Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars). A day later, Grinderman were the opening act for The White Stripes at Madison Square Garden. Furthermore, Nick Cave was accompanied on his solo tour of his Grinderman bandmates and played there also songs from that album.
