The commander of Åland, Baron Georg Carl von chub, fled across the frozen lake to Grisslehamn when the Russians occupied the island under General Kulnew. Kulnew pursued by chub on the ice to Grisslehamn, but before it reached the village, retired from chub after Älmsta back. Only a small unit under the direction of a young ensign remained. Kulnew threatened Grisslehamn burn down when the unit would not retreat a few kilometers. After a moment's pause, the ensign pulled back with his unit, even though he risked it, to be brought before a court-martial. Kulnew did not stay long, but took little later. Grisslehamn was saved with it.

In memory of the fallen soldiers who defended Grisslehamn on March 19, 1809 was a statue in the harbor in the form of a hat, inspired by the uniform hats of Uppland Regiment, erected.
