Großpetersdorf ( Veliki Petrštof Croatian, Hungarian Nagyszentmihály ) is a market town in the district Oberwart in Burgenland in Austria. The proportion of Burgenland Hungary is around 2% of the Burgenland Croats about 1.5%.

Geography

The municipality is located in southern Burgenland; on a hill overlooking the Zickenbach and Tauchenbachtal.

History

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Nagyszentmihály. After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ). Market town is Großpetersdorf since 2000 ( by State Gazette 18/2000 ).

Railway

Currently, Großpetersdorf terminus of Pinkatalbahn. Until Rechnitz there is nostalgia trains. In planning and consideration is a further extension of the line to the Hungarian Szombathely (German Szombathely ). From 1920 to about 1933, there was a narrow-gauge forest railway to Rumpersdorf, which mainly served the timber transport.
