Group 3 element

For the third group ( scandium ) ( subgroup III ) in the periodic table of the elements include the elements scandium (Sc ), yttrium (Y), lanthanum (La) and actinium (Ac). Scandium and yttrium are considered as light metals. The following lanthanum in the 6th period elements are called lanthanides on actinium in the 7th period referred to as actinides.

Occurrence

In the Earth's crust are the elements with a share of 5.1 · 10-4 (Sc ), 2.6 x 10-3 (Y), 1.7 x 10-3 ( La) and 6.1 · 10-14 (Ac) weight percent.

Chemical Properties

The elements of the scandium group in their chemical properties to the preceding main group metals of the second group of the periodic table ( alkali earth metals ) similar as the elements of the group 13 ( earth metals / III. Main group).

The elements of the third group is the fact that the outer d-shell, the outer s orbital is singly occupied twice. That's why they are in compounds, with few exceptions, in the oxidation state 3.

Electrochemical the elements of the scandium are less noble than aluminum and more noble than the alkaline earth metals. The base character increases with increasing atomic mass.
