Group 8 element

As an iron group of the periodic system, the elements of the eighth group are collectively referred to in accordance with the IUPAC Nomenclature of inorganic.

The group contains the elements iron, ruthenium, osmium and Hassium, all belonging to the heavy metals.

Hassium also belongs to the group of Transuranium Elements, a group name is not given in the nomenclature.

An older, still usual definition of the iron group includes the chemical elements iron, cobalt and nickel. In older versions of the periodic system, they were expected to Group VIIIA (IUPAC 1970) or VIIIB ( Demming 1923). To avoid confusion, these older definitions should no longer be used.

Together with the platinum group metals ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum, the three metals iron, cobalt and nickel are also counted to nine- iron, platinum group elements.
