Gruffydd Maelor I

Gruffydd ap Madog, Gruffydd Maelor and I ( † 1191 ) was a prince of the Welsh Principality Powyys. He was the founder of the ruling dynasty that ruled the northern part of Powys in the 13th century. He received his nickname after Maelor, a part of his kingdom, and to distinguish him from his grandson of Gruffydd Maelor II ( † 1269 ).

He was a son of Madog ap Maredudd and his wife Susanna, a daughter of Gruffydd ap Cynan. After her father and her eldest brother Llywelyn had died in 1160, shared the surviving sons of the kingdom among themselves. Her cousin Owain Cyfeiliog, who had already been under her father sub ruler of Cyfeiliog, now ruler of the southern part of Powys was. The northern part of the north Rhaeadr received Gruffydd and his brothers Owain Owain Fychan and Brogyntyn. Gruffydd Maelor and received the Commotes IAL. Later he was able to expand his kingdom by Nanheudwy and after the death of his brother Owain Fychan 1187 to Cynllaith and Lower Mochnant. Thus he was able to at Penllyn and Edeirnion that were in the possession of his half-brother Owain Brogyntyn, unite the northern part of Powys again.

He married his cousin Angharad, daughter of Owain Gwynedd. He had two sons, Madog and Owain.
