Grupo Desportivo de Maputo

Grupo Desportivo de Maputo, also briefly Desportivo Maputo or GDM, is a sports club based in Maputo, capital of Mozambique. The football team secured the 1957-2006 eight times the championship of Moçambique. The roller hockey team of the club counts with 15 won 1976-2010 National Championships to the top. In colonial times, they also won the championship three times of Portugal.

In Desportivo Maputo there are among other departments for athletics, basketball, indoor soccer, and swimming.

History

The club was founded on 31 May 1921 as Grupo Desportivo de Lourenço Marques Sá Couto by Professor José Maria Rodrigues, Alfredo Fragoso, Américo Costa, Martinho Carvalho Durão and Professor Cabanelas. After the independence of Mozambique in 1976, the club was renamed Grupo Desportivo de Maputo. The logo of the club was changed.

1925 won the city championship Desportivo of Lourenço Marques, which was held until 1961, his first title. In 1957, the club won its first of eight Mozambican championships. The last success in this first competition was in 1956 discharged Desportivo celebrate 2006. 2012, the football team fell prey to the first descent.

The first known player of Desportivo, which in the Portuguese mainland had success was, Mário Wilson, who was with Sporting CP Masters.
