Guachipas

Guachipas is the capital of the departments Guachipas in Salta Province in northwestern Argentina. It is situated 115 kilometers from the provincial capital of Salta.

Attractions

  • Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción de Guachipas. The Church of Guachipas was built according to surviving documents from 1610, by the Jesuits. The task of the parish was the evangelization of the huachipas from the Calchaquíes. The corresponding decree for the establishment of the church is found in the documents of Mariano Zorriaguieta of 9 October 1614 signed by Bishop Trejo and his secretary Don Lorenzo Fernández Paredes.
  • Cerro de Cuevas Pintadas Guachipas. 1965 a cave system was discovered with 33 crossings near Guachipas whose walls were covered with cave paintings. Their formation is estimated at the time of 900-1470 AD. The cave paintings were declared a National Historic Monument and are open to visitors.
