GuaÃba River
Guaiba in Porto Alegre
The Rio Guaiba or Lake Guaiba is about 50 km long, approximately 496 km ² comprehensive confluence of 5 rivers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. In the northeast of the estuary is Porto Alegre.
The hydrographic basin covers the following areas:
- Rio Gravataí,
- Rio dos Sinos with the cities of Novo Hamburgo and São Leopoldo,
- Rio Caí flowing through Caxias do Sul,
- Rio Taquari and
- Rio Jacuí.
The Rio Guaiba, which acts like a lagoon merges with the Lagoa dos Patos even more.
Some of the tributaries were heavily polluted by industrial effluents ( eg leather industry), pesticides and untreated domestic sewage. This led to various publicity campaigns of environmental groups, city dwellers, farmers and even indigenous groups in the remote jungles ( Mata Atlântica ) of the headwaters of the rivers brought together.
The Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul began in November 1989 on an integrated program Pró - Guaiba, which was sponsored by the Inter -American Development Bank with 60%. The investment budget of the years 1994-1998 amounted to 220.5 million U.S. $.
