Gualán

Gualan is a 17,000 inhabitants town and a municipality in the department of Zacapa in Guatemala. It is located 168 km north-east of Guatemala City and 36 km north-east of Zacapa on the Atlantic Highway CA 9 m height to 141.

The 709 km ² large municipality extends between the Sierra de las Minas in the north and the Sierra del Espíritu Santo in the south in the valley of the Río Motagua. It has a total of about 55,000 inhabitants, of whom the majority are Ladinos. The municipality is next to the main town Gualan from 56 " rural communities " ( Aldeas ). Main economic activities are agriculture, craft and service sectors.

Adjacent Municipalities are Río Hondo in the west and Zacapa and La Unión in the south. In the north of the municipios runs along the main ridge of the Sierra de las Minas, the border of the department of Izabal, to which it borders with Honduras in the East.

The town has a railway station Gualan since 1896, but the traffic was stopped on the railway line between Guatemala City and Puerto Barrios on the Karibikküst 2007.
