Guan Zhong

Guan Zhong (Chinese管仲, Pinyin Guǎn Zhong, also Guanzi, Chinese管子;? *, † 645 BC ) was a famous politician and philosopher of the Spring and Autumn Period. His call name ( ming ) was Yiwu (Chinese夷吾). Guan came from Yingshang (Chinese颍 上) (today Yingshang Circle (Chinese颍 上 县), Anhui Province). He was fourteen years Chancellor of the State of Qi (Chinese齐/齐) and close confidant and adviser of Duke Huan of Qi ( Chinese齐桓公/齐桓公).

Guan Zhong was friends with Bao Shuya (Chinese鲍叔牙, Pinyin Bao Shuya ), a statesman of Qi, who served as Minister by Duke Huan of Qi and Guan recommended this as chancellor.

In many ancient texts is reported about him, for example, in Zuozhuan, and Lun Yu Shiji.

Guanzi ( "Master Guan " )

Under the name of Guan Zhong a book called Guanzi (Chinese管子) ( "Master Guan " ) was written in the deeds and thoughts of Guan Zhong recorded.

This work, however, was apparently compiled until centuries later and is regarded as a collection of various anonymous writings from the Jixia Academy.

As the work of Han Feizi it consists of legalistic and Daoist parts. Guan Zhong is considered one of the fathers of Chinese legalism.

The Guanzi was translated into English by Walter Allyn Rickett.
