Guðbrandur Þorláksson

Guðbrandur Þorláksson (* 1541July 20, 1627 ) was a mathematician, cartographer and bishop of the Icelandic town Hólar.

He studied at the Cathedral School Hólar and in the University of Copenhagen. Later he was rector of the successful Skálholter school, parish priest in Breiðabólstaður and Bishop of Hólar until his death 1627th

He edited and published at least 80 books during his episcopate, including the translation of the Bible into Icelandic and Icelandic law book. He is also known that he has created in 1590 as the first accurate map of Iceland.

He fathered at least one child, his daughter Steinunn, born 1571 by Guðrún Gísladóttir. His portrait can also be found on the Icelandic 50 -crown banknote ( now barely in circulation).
