Guillaume Coustou the Elder

Guillaume Coustou (* November 29, 1677 in Lyon, † February 22, 1746 in Paris) was a French painter and sculptor. He was the brother of Nicolas Coustou and father of Guillaume Coustou the Younger, both also a sculptor.

Coustou came 18 years to Paris with his uncle Antoine Coysevox. In 1697 he won the Roman Academy Award, but did not get his brother a place at the Académie de France in Rome. He therefore went to Rome at his own expense and worked with Pierre Le Gros the Younger, whose lively Baroque style, he was strongly influenced. Already in 1700 he returned to Paris. In 1704 he became a member of the Royal Academy. In 1715 he became a professor of the Academy and in 1733 rector.

In France are still quite a few of his works available; name has the chapel at Versailles a number. In the museum of the Louvre you can see of him the marble statue of Mary Leszczyńska, which is made ​​into splayed flirtatious attitude to use (powder ) Juno.
