Guillem Sagrera

Guillem Sagrera (* 1380 in Felanitx Mallorca, † 1456 in Naples) was a Spanish sculptor, builder and architect of the Gothic.

Life

Guillem Sagrera was born as the son of stonemason Antoni Sagrera. Already in 1397, he worked with his father in the workshop Mirador as a stonemason and sculptor. There he received his first education, especially of Jean de Valenciennes, a sculptor from France.

1404, he worked with Jean de Valenciennes at the Franciscan church of Sant Jaume in Perpignan. In 1410 he led the restoration of the tower of the Cathedral of Sainte -Eulalie -et -Sainte -Julie in Elne, where he also produced sculptures and the coat of arms of Bishop Jerónimo de Ocon. During this time he was appointed master stonemason. 1416 was followed by further work on the Cathedral of Sant Joan Baptista in Perpignan.

In the period 1420-1447 was Sagreras intense creative period. At that time he was married to Jaumina Tura. He had a group of employees, among them Antoni Jaume, the Vilasclar brothers and later his two sons. During this period the work on the Cathedral of Palma and Llotja dels Mercaders, also in Palma. The last phase of his work was held in Naples 1447-1455 at the court of Alfonso V ( Aragon ), where he managed the renovation work at the Castel Nuovo.

His most famous works are the works of the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, Llotja dels Mercaders also in Palma, parish church of Sant Miquel in Felanitx his birthplace and the renovation work at the Castel Nuovo in Naples.
