Güira

The Güira [ gwiɾa ] is a percussion instrument of Latin American music.

She plays especially in the Merengue a central role. ( The traditional merengue in the cast with accordion, saxophone, Güira and Tambora is in the Dominican Republic, also called " Güiri güiri ". )

The Güira similar in structure and the way of playing the more familiar, machined from pumpkin Güiro, which is used in Cuban and Puerto Rican music, such as the Danzon, but also in the Colombian cumbia and vallenato music genres. It consists of a metal cylinder, which has a rough surface with many small protrusions.

About this surface with an iron broom ( Scraper ) now is rubbed. Thus, a sound is generated, which can be interpreted as the Caribbean equivalent of the Hi- Hat. The Güira has by the scraping technique on interesting variations. The short stop sounds similar in principle to a "closed hi-hat ," the long-drawn- stop as an "open hi-hat ."
