Gulf of Ä°zmir

The Gulf of Izmir ( Turkish İzmir Körfezi ) formerly the Gulf of Smyrna, is a gulf in the Aegean Sea and upstream to the west or north-west of the Turkish city of Izmir.

The Gulf of Izmir is about 32 km long and 16 km wide. Its entrance is located about 30 km south of the Greek island of Lesbos between the city and the peninsula of Karaburun and Foça to the west, the ancient Phocaea in the east. The (South ) Ostend is enclosed by the city of Izmir.

Next to the port of Izmir, the second largest in the country, there are anchorages in the whole area of the Gulf. The most significant of the smaller cities on the Gulf is Urla.
