Gulfport -Biloxi International Airport ( IATA: GPT, ICAO: KGPT, FAA LID: GPT ) is a both civilian and military- Airport 6 km northeast of the central business district of Gulfport, a city in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. It has been operated since 1977 by the Gulfport - Biloxi Regional Airport Authority.

History

The airport was originally used in 1942 by the United States Army Air Forces as a training center for the Air Training Command. The then Gulfport Army Airfield called airport was opened on 7 July 1942. With the end of the war and the use by the military, the airport on January 31, 1946 has been set to the reserve status and released in 1949 for civilian use. In the early 1950s began Southern Airways and later National Airlines to fly to the airport. Due to the cold war a military use of the airport was again decided as Gulfport Air Force Base and the Air Base was officially opened on 16 July 1951.

In August 2005, Hurricane Catrina destroyed nearly all the buildings of the airport so that the airport and the terminal had to be rebuilt until 2011 for 287 million U.S. dollars.
