Gunnerus Library

The Gunnerus library in Trondheim is Norway's oldest scientific library. It was founded in 1768 as a library, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences ( DKNVS ). The library is named after Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus.

Due to its important historical collections from the 18th century, the library Gunnerus one of the major research libraries in Scandinavia. History

As a founding year for the Gunnerus library is the 1768. Presented in this The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences ( DKNVS ) Peter Daniel Baade as a librarian. This should convey the Library of the DKNVS outwardly. Baade's tenure was short-lived. Just one month after his appointment, he was called as a parish pastor after Sjælland in Denmark. The library history is closely connected with the Museum, now the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology. Both were part of the 1968 University of Trondheim. The Community Library of The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences, the Museum and the Norwegian Teachers College was founded in 1974.

As part of the legal deposit scheme the library received in 1939 the requisition for Norwegian prints. This law led to The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences in Trondheim and the library of mountains museum had the right to demand respectively one copy of each book of a Norwegian publisher. With a new law on legal deposit in 1989, was selbige extended to all university libraries, including the Gunnerus library.

From 2007 on, not all required copies are received by the Gunnerus library. These are now being distributed to the various branch libraries NTNU University Library with their specific areas of expertise.

Name

Beginning with the 1768 got the library name, the library of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences. In 1974 came the merger of Gunnerus library and the library of the Norwegian Teacher high school. This was called the Community Library The Royal Society of Sciences, the Museum and the Norwegian Teacher high school. In 1984 it was officially named the University Library in Trondheim.

In 1996, the Engineering and Natural Sciences University of Norway was founded, the university library was a part of this in January 1997. The Old Library The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences was to a section library and was named Gunnerus library.
