Gunnison is a town in Sanpete County in the U.S. state of Utah.

Geography

The site covers an area of 13.7 km ² (5.3 mi ²).

History

The town was first settled in 1859 and was then called " Chalk Point". A first attempt of settlement just west of the present location of the village had failed because the selected area at that time was threatened in the spring of flooding. Was named the place after the Government Commissioner John W. Gunnison, who along with six companions came in 1853 in a clash with Indians from the tribe of the Paiute killed; This incident, however, occurred in Millard County, not in Sanpete County. 1893 Gunnison was first officially registered as a Town.
