Günther Kohlmey

Gunther Kohlmey ( born July 27, 1913 in Berlin, † December 25, 1999 in Berlin) was one of the leading economists in the GDR.

Life

Kohlmey was born in a family of teachers in Berlin, studied in Berlin and Freiburg economics and a doctorate in Berlin in 1939 with the dissertation " The industrialization of British India and Argentina. A contribution to the problem of Neuindustrialisierung ". After that he worked as a research assistant at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Berlin. Kohlmey had joined the NSDAP in 1937. As a lieutenant in the army he ran in 1943 on the Kuban over to the Red Army. Until 1947 he was a teacher at the Central School Antifa in Krasnogorsk. After his return to Germany he joined the SED in 1948 and became dean of the Faculty of Economics and Director of the Institute for Political Economy of Socialism at the German Academy of Forestry Administration Zinna.

1953 Kohlmey founder and chief editor of "economic science" and founding director of the Institute of Economics of the German Academy of Sciences. In 1955 he acquired with his work " The democratic world market " great international fame. In the same year he was awarded the National Prize of the GDR. In 1957, he became a target of the SED official " struggle against revisionism " and was - like Fritz Behrens and Arne Benary - forced out of his offices. He was head of the Institute of Economics of the German Academy of Sciences (from 1972 Academy of Sciences of the GDR ) and 1961-1969 Professor and Chair of international trade and currency relations at the University of Economics, Berlin -Karl Horst. In 1978 he became Professor Emeritus.

Since 1964 he was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, 1978-1983 Chairman of the National Committee of Economic Sciences of the GDR. At times he was economic adviser to the Cuban revolutionary government in the era of economic management by Che Guevara.

His grave is in the cemetery of the Evangelical church blessing in Berlin-Weissensee.
