Gunther Plaut

Wolf Gunther Plaut, CC, O.Ont ( born November 1, 1912 in Münster, Germany, † February 8, 2012 in Toronto ) was a Canadian Reform rabbi and author. He was for several decades rabbi of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto.

Life

Plaut was born in Munster, the son of Jonas and Selma Plaut that drew Auerbachsche Orphanage in Berlin from 1922 to 1938. His younger brother Walter was also a rabbi and lived in Great Neck, New York later. Plaut received a doctorate in law. He left Germany at the time of the Nuremberg Laws in 1935 and first emigrated to the United States. In 1939 he was ordained as a rabbi at the Hebrew Union College, returned as a military rabbi of the U.S. forces back to Germany and was involved in the liberation of the concentration camp Mittelbau- Dora. After the war he was at first rabbi in Chicago and St. Paul. In 1961 he came to the Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. Besides his work as a Rabbi Plaut published a number of articles and books on Judaism. 2001 visited Gunther Plaut one of the Union's annual meeting for Progressive Judaism in Halberstadt. Since then, at his Alzheimer's was diagnosed, Gunther Plaut came no more to the public.

Work

Gunther Plaut's commentary on the Torah and Haftorah for today is one of the standard works of the progressive currents. A German translation of his Torah commentary appeared in the years 1999 to 2004 in five volumes.
