His seal impression is obtained by documents from the years 1312, 1316, and on several occasions between 11 November 1322 and 23 November 1326.

After the death of his father he was called on March 30, 1323 as the reigning Count of Wittenburg.

Gunzelin probably died between May 3 and August 7, 1327, as hereinafter only be brothers without him, and in his place his eldest son Otto I appeared in a document.

The latter inherited his father as Count of Wittenburg and Schwerin, while Nicholas (III ), then the next born, Count of Tecklenburg and the male line was continued. However, he sold to his son on December 7, 1358 the schweriner counties to the Dukes of Mecklenburg, which is now titled as Count of Schwerin.

According to Hoffmann speaks more likely than not that even Elizabeth, mentioned in a document in 1378 as a widowed Countess of Gützkow the children Gunzelin VI. is attributed. Schmidt makes clear in retrospect to his post that he is also inclined to this view.
