Gura Râului

Gura Râului ( old spelling: Gura Rîului; German Auendorf or Guraro; Hungarian Guraró ) is a town in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania, Romania.

Location

Gura Râului is located at the headwaters of Cibin ( Zibin ) in the Marginimea Sibiului. South of the settlement extends the Cindrel Mountains ( Munţii cindrel ). The long and high-altitude village ( about 550 meters above sea level) is surrounded by dense coniferous forests.

The village is of Sibiu ( Hermannstadt) on the European Route 68, about Cristian ( ) and Orlat after 18 kilometers distance.

Past and present

Together with the neighboring villages Orlat and Poplaca Gura Râului was first documented in the year 1322. The stationed during the Austro -Hungarian monarchy in the neighboring village Orlat Border Regiment also influenced the development of Gura Râului. To this day, stories and legends are told about the time of the military border.

Despite its proximity to the German, Transylvanian Saxon settlement area in the north, the village developed through conscious cultivation of tradition to one of the most striking examples of Romanian village culture in the region around Sibiu.
