Gustav Kunze

Gustav Kunze ( born October 4, 1793 in Leipzig, † April 30, 1851 ) was a German botanist, Bryologe, Spongiologe, entomologist and physician. His botanical author abbreviation is " Kunze ".

Life and work

1813 Kunze enrolled in the University of Leipzig. In 1819 he received his doctorate in medicine. Already during his studies he undertook scientific excursions by Germany, the results of which he in Volume 1 of the " Mycological books " described in 1817. In 1815 he wrote for various magazines article on sponges. 1818, the " Entomological fragments " in the published " New Writings of the Natural History Society at Halle ." Kunze enjoyed early on a very good reputation as a botanist, so that he a member of the Wernerian Natural History Society in Edinburgh was in 1817. 1818 was followed by the membership of the Botanical Society of Ratisbon, 1819 in the Society of Naturalists Moscow and in the subsequent period memberships in more than 20 other scientific societies in Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden and Italy. In 1818 he was co-founder of the Society of Natural Sciences in Leipzig and from 1822 its secretary. In the same year he became an associate professor of medicine and a few years later curator and librarian at the United Gehlerschen Medici niches Library in Leipzig. He continued in this position until 1848. 1835 he became associate professor in 1845 and full professor of botany. 1837 took over the directorship of the Botanical Garden of the University of Leipzig.

Kunze's botanical research focus were the ferns, of which he, the two-volume work " The ferns in kolorirten pictures faithfully explained and described " authored 1840-1851. These designs are considered as one of the first detailed classifications of the cryptogams.

In addition to his botanical work Kunze also operated entomological studies. So he wrote in 1818 a monograph on the genus of the pipe beetle ( Donacia ), described in the same year, the beetle genus Zeugophora and published in 1822 together with Jacob Philipp Müller Wilbrand the " Monograph of the ant beetle ( Scydmaenus Latr. ) "

Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach named the Australian plant genus Kunzea in honor of Gustav Kunze.
