Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester

The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra ( GMJO ) is a youth orchestra, which was founded in 1986 by Claudio Abbado in Vienna.

History

In addition to fostering musical talent and working with young musicians, it was Claudio Abbado an important concern to young Austrian musicians playing together with colleagues from Czechoslovakia and Hungary to promote. This enabled the GMJO the first international youth orchestra to hold open auditions in the countries of the Eastern bloc. 1992 GMJO for musicians under 26 from Europe became accessible.

Orchestra

At the annual auditions in 25 European cities authorized by Abbado jury makes a selection among the applicants. Prominent orchestra musicians are members of the jury and support during the sample phase of the orchestra the development of the programs.

The tour repertoire of GMJO extends from classical to contemporary music with an emphasis on the major works of the Romantic and late Romantic period. Its high artistic level and the international success of animated eminent conductors and soloists to work with the GMJO. For years, the GMJO regular guest at festivals in Europe, the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, the International Music Festival in Lucerne, the Salzburg Festival and the Salzburg Easter Festival, the Edinburgh Festival and the BBC Proms.

Former members of the GMJO are today engaged in European orchestras, partly in leading positions. The orchestra is an associate member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras.

Organization

Founder and Music Director Claudio Abbado, the artistic and operational management has held since 1996 Alexander Meraviglia - Crivelli as Secretary General. For the selection and training of the members of the orchestra with long-standing faculty are responsible alongside the assistant conductor David Afkham.

The orchestra is under the patronage of the President Heinz Fischer ( Austria ), and Giorgio Napolitano (Italy ), the former President Václav Havel (Czech Republic ) and Richard von Weizsäcker ( Germany ), as well as by Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission ( 1985-1995 ).

As a pan-European Youth Orchestra, it also stands under the patronage of the Council of Europe.

Financing

The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra is funded by grants, sponsorship revenue and donations as well as through fees that it receives from organizers for concert engagements; is of special importance to the residence of partners - currently Vienna, Bolzano, Interlaken, Lisbon - wearing the elaborate orchestral rehearsals.

To financing further acts the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra Support Foundation as unincorporated Foundation, headquartered in Munich, which is recognized as a charity for promoting cultural purposes. Is funded by donations, donations to the Foundation's assets and subsidies, public and private funding bodies.

The orchestra is subsidized by the Austrian ministries Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture, Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Federal Ministry for Science and Research, and by the Vienna Magistrate (MA 7 - culture).
