Gustav Mützel

Gustav Ludwig Heinrich Mützel ( born December 7, 1839 in Berlin, † October 29, 1893 ) was a German painter of animals. He was known for his pictures of animals, in particular for his illustrations in the second edition of Brehm's Animal Life.

Life

Gustav Mützel was the son of the painter Heinrich Mützel and his wife Luise Pauline Frederick. He attended the French School in his hometown. Subsequently Mützel began to study at the Art Academy at age 18 and was, amongst others, Pupil of the painter Eduard Daege.

On November 1, 1865 in Berlin Mützel married Anna Schönherr and had with her three children; Hans, Walter and Gertrude. With his wife to Mützel settled as a photographer in Konigsberg in Neumark. To satisfy his interest in the latest technological achievements of his art direction better Mützel moved with his family to Berlin in 1870.

After the Franco-German War Skirmish reached his artistic breakthrough as an illustrator of the most important encyclopedias of his time. In addition, however, he also created a number of drawings and illustrations; inter alia, for the German Ornithological Society, whose member was Mützel since 1874. Mützels diverse interests led, inter alia, also to memberships with the German Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory and the Association of Berlin Artists. The Nießen'sche glee club honored brush with an honorary membership.

At the age of 54 years Gustav Mützel died in his apartment ( Berlin SW, hail Str 10) on 29 October 1893 of a heart and kidney ailments. His final resting place he found on November 1st in the cemetery in Berlin- Marie village.
