Gustav Nottebohm

Martin Gustav Nottebohm ( born November 12, 1817 in Lüdenscheid, † October 29, 1882 in Graz ) was a German musicologist, composer and Beethoven scholar.

Life

Nottebohm first studied in Berlin and went from there in 1840 at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied with Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. In 1846 he went to Vienna to operate there with Simon Sechter complementary counterpoint studies. He settled in Vienna, where he earned his living as a piano and theory teacher. In 1858 he was appointed as a board member, in 1864, archivist and librarian of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.

He devoted his actual work dealing with Schubert and Beethoven. In the years 1868 and 1874 he published the first work directories of Schubert and Beethoven, in 1865, put Nottebohm several books on Beethoven's sketches and the resulting composition technique to be recognized before. In 1880 he published new research on Mozart.

Nottebohm is considered the founder of modern sketches research, which today constitutes an important part of Beethoven research, since it allows a unique insight into the creative process of the composer. Nottebohm publications on Beethoven's sketches are indispensable to this day, so that his name has survived as an important research to date in musical art. On Nottebohm the discovery goes back to the main theme of Bach's " Art of Fugue" with the three themes of the unfinished Contrapunctus XIV from the said works of Bach according to the rules of the quadruple counterpoint can be combined.

In 1921 in Vienna Dobling ( 19th district ) was named the Nottebohmstraße after him. Letters from Nottebohm be kept in the State Archive in Leipzig.
